Google+ …Non-plussed, but early days.

Hey I’m on Google+ now!! – Some good people invited me, and I’m in the club. Lucky me. I’m there, late-ish – but there. Did you see me scurry in with the enthusiasm of a cat with a piece of string? Did you,  did you?

Well I’ve been in, and following all the hype, the most accurate thing I can say in first impressions, rather like many commentators I have read – is that I am kind of `non-plussed` – Google has neither replaced Facebook – yet – nor seriously challenged it – yet. Jeez it’s quiet. I can circle all the people I like, but still seeing my stream dominated by people who make mass communications on these sort of places their business, like Chris Brogan, Pete Cashmore et al.

Do I need Google+? Socially, no. Twitter and Facebook suffice in the main for online presence and chat. Time is tough enough as it is – to add more stream content duplication is not going to benefit me. That said, it’s nice to have a different form of potentially more meaningful communication with contacts who are not comfortable with the ingrained privacy of Facebook, but are limited by the restrictions of Twitter & LinkedIn.

Which brings me to business profile benefit. Well I’m there, and so are many people within the Social Media & Digital PR & Marketing domain. No-one else is, it appears – but that, albeit socially limiting – is fine. All visibility within my professional arena is good visibility. I make it my business not to sell through traditional and irritating methods associated with recruitment, however my business and my clients require it that I create maximum effective visibility to the social media & digital market – to best represent their search for talent.

I’m all for giving things a try, and I am in the process of becoming a Google user and fan, and all that comes with operating portions of my business within it’s online framework. That means Google+ gets my backing. It’s a slow and slightly anaemic start, but if you want to meet me there, then I’m willingly there. And we have to remember, it is officially in the testing stage.

All the hype about killing Facebook? – it won’t – and I’m glad about that, because I don’t want another Facebook. Will I be able to put CloudNine in the picture on Google+? – we’ll see. All I know is, it will be better for us all being there. So give it time, give out some +1′s, and in due course we all may grow to see the benefits.
